Turmeric Dressing

 This dressing is very simple to make and uses Turmeric which is one of my favourite spices. I find that having a jar of this dressing on hand is an easy way of getting this incredibly healthy ingredient into our meals everyday. A huge salad of some sort is always a part of whatever  we eat in this house and it tastes great when poured over lentils or quinoa and roasted vegetables.

Aside from it being delicious there is also a more important reason for making this golden spice part of a salad dressing, turmeric is very good for you!

These are some of the reasons why turmeric is so beneficial to take every day.

Turmeric is a very powerful anti-oxidant and an effective compound for treating a wide range of ailments.

It is potent anti-inflammatory which is why it is so beneficial in treating skin disorders such as Psoriasis and Eczema. It also a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and can reduce joint pain without any of the side effects of mainstream pharmaceutical drugs.

It is hugely helpful in calming the symptoms of Irritable Bowl Syndrome  and ulcerative colitis and other digestive disorders.

It can boost the effect of some chemo drugs (such as paclitaxel) and also reduce the side effects. It has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumours and it has been found that by pre treating with Curcumin it renders cancer cells more vulnerable to both chemotherapy and radiology.

Tumeric is widely used in Indian cooking which may explain why there is such a low rate of Alzheimers in this country.

It can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes

It boosts the immune system helping to ward off colds and flu.

Turmeric  has been used for thousands of years by both Chinese and Ayurvedic traditional medicine to help with the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Turmeric is not easily absorbed by the body and because of its rapid metabolism it is excreted very quickly. This means that after an hour of eating it very little remains in the blood stream. Curcumin which is the active compound in Turmeric does not dissolve in water and is in fact only soluble in fat, where once dissolved can go straight into the lymph system. Black pepper also enhances the bioavailability of turmeric. It is understood that the chemical in pepper called piperine could inhibit certain digestive enzymes which then increases the amount that it can be absorbed by the body. Mixing curcumin with quercetin also helps with absorption. Quercetin is a flavonoid which can be found in plant foods such berries, red grapes, apple, onions and citrus fruits, it is also found in cider vinegar, hence another key ingredient in this dressing.

Using Turmeric along with any other spices of your choice allows you to utilise all the goodness of Turmeric in a very easy and delicious way knowing that you are getting maximum absorption. I get asked all the time from friends and family what the recipe is for this dressing so here it is.


 Turmeric salad dressing

  • 1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 tbs maple syrup
  • 1 tbs dijon mustard
  • 2 large pinches of malden salt
  • large grating of pepper
  • 1tsp grd cumin
  • 2 tsp grd urmeric
  • 1tsp grd coriander

shake up the contents in a large jar.
